My favorite holiday! (in July!!!!) I love making red, white and blue food for July 4th celebrations! I am going to try to make something new each day to really get in the spirit. The first thing that I have prepared for you is a FIREWORKS cake. This is SUPER easy and SUPER fast; but still has that WOW factor. Cutting into this cake will be a celebration of its own. If you are having family or friends over for a fourth of July party- you need this cake! You can make it at the last minute, and no one will ever know! I made extra “fireworks” candy melt decorations to put on top of the cake and I love, love, love how they turned out. Just a few minutes extra can really take something simple and make it special!
Next, I made 2 different kinds of cookies at the same time. I started off with a sugar cookie recipe and divided into 3 different colors. I then layered the dough, rolled it like a jelly roll and sliced and baked them into dazzling red, white and blue pinwheels. You can make this dough ahead, and freeze it for a few days and bake them on the day you want to serve them. I prepared the second batch of sugar cookies (using my favorite sugar cookie dough, see archives) and cut them into stars and stripes. I made the stars & stripes while the pinwheel dough was chilling for 2 hours. The video kind of shows the flurry of activity in my kitchen when I get into my baking mode. I think that is why baking is therapy for me—everyone in my family gets the heck out of the way, so I have the entire kitchen to myself for a few hours!
